National campaign tackles food waste

The 20th of March saw the launch of the national campaign ‘United against food waste’ at innovation centre THREE-SIXTY in Veghel, Noord-Brabant. The campaign was initiated by the Taskforce Circular Economy in Food.

Milgro played an active part in the founding of the Taskforce and as a core member helped ensure that reducing food waste is now a widely supported goal. The aim of the Taskforce is to cut food waste in half by 2030, compared to 2015. In the next four years, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality will invest 7 million euros to support the Taskforce in its activities.

One third

Currently, one third of food produced worldwide is being wasted. The Netherlands have formulated the ambition to comply with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 by achieving a 50% reduction by 2030 and thus take on a leading role in Europe. In order to achieve this goal, a coalition of companies, social organisations, knowledge institutes and governments was formed: the Taskforce Circular Economy on Food.

The Taskforce is made up of 25 members, including Rabobank, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Voedingscentrum (food knowledge centre), Hutten Catering, Wageningen University & Research, and Milgro. Together, they will aim to structurally reduce wastage through actions and new initiatives.

Although the theme ‘food waste’ has been on the political agenda for a long time, this is the first time that such a large collaborative is formed in the Netherlands to actively realise concrete goals. All partners in the Taskforce share the will to minimize the wastage of food quickly, both in the production chain and on the side of the consumer, and have agreed to contribute to this mission in a visible way.

Insights into food waste

Laurens Groen, CEO of Milgro explains: “As a core member of the Taskforce, we have collaborated with our partners over the past year to formulate a strategy for the program and to find a concrete approach. We are proud of the things we have achieved so far.

“Milgro has an important practical role in the Taskforce, for instance by making food waste insightful and measurable through monitoring. Based on the data we collect, companies can take action to reduce avoidable wastage. Secondly, we help companies to gain (more) value from their waste streams.

“Together, Milgro and the other members of the Taskforce are creating a movement that shows which powers are already present in the Netherlands and which initiatives are capable of reducing food waste. We are happy to contribute our specialist knowledge and tools to this effort.

It’s time for action, and the corporate sector can only gain from this. Reducing waste is profitable in every way: for the economy, the ecology and society!”
