Hessing, a leading company in the cut fruit and vegetable sector, has contracted Milgro to handle its waste management as of 1 September. The aim of this partnership is to make Hessing’s waste streams even more transparent and manageable. Milgro will be assuming responsibility for a uniform and controlled waste management process and an ongoing push for better financial and sustainability performance. In this context, the partners have put the reduction of raw materials wastage and optimised valorisation high on their joint agenda.
Cutting and processing fruit and vegetables form a complicated business, and one that Hessing has been specialising in for close to 60 years. The fresh produce is processed into ready-to-cook vegetable dishes, fruit preparations, fresh juices and main course salads. These super fresh products are distributed swiftly throughout the Benelux region – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Every week, millions of packed perishable products are shipped out from Hessing’s various production locations.
Hessing CFO Wouter Harlaar: “Hessing is already working on the transition to the circular economy in a range of areas. Based on their benchmarks and specialist expertise, Milgro were able to quickly convince us that we can still implement a variety of optimisations in terms of wastage and the valorisation of streams. Milgro will be supporting us in these projects.”
Milgro is looking forward to the collaboration. “Hessing is a leading player in the Food market and an excellent match with our firm,” says Alex van Kuilenburg of Milgro’s Food team. “Not only in view of Hessing’s strong ambitions and dynamic operational management, but above all thanks the strategic importance they assign to sustainability. We firmly believe in the joint opportunities this partnership presents and look forward to a fruitful collaboration.”
